What exerchomai means

1

to go out: to move from inside a place to outside it, or to leave a place behind

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

At its core this word is about crossing from inside to outside. Someone steps out of a house, a town, a boat, a tomb, or a region, and the focus is on the leaving and the new direction taken. The Gospels use it constantly to keep their stories moving: Jesus goes out to teach, the crowds go out to meet him, the disciples go out on a mission.

The same picture stretches from simple stepping outside to deliberate departure. To go out from a house can be a small everyday act, but to go out from a town, a country, or a group of people can be a decisive break. When the word is paired with a command to leave, it often carries the weight of separation: come out and be set apart, shake the dust off and move on.

Because the action is always away from somewhere, the same verb naturally covers both the small step over a threshold and the large act of pulling up roots and leaving for good.

to come out of a person: said of an evil spirit driven out, or of healing power going out from someone

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

When the early Christians described an evil spirit leaving a person, this is the word they reached for. The spirit is pictured as having been inside the person and now forced to go out, usually at a command. The point is the release of the person, not just the movement of the spirit.

The same image works in reverse for healing. Power is described as going out from Jesus to the person who touches him, as though something passed from one to the other. In both cases the word keeps its basic sense of moving out from inside, but here what moves out is a spirit or a power rather than a person walking through a door.

3

to spread abroad: said of a report, rumor, or message that travels out and reaches people

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

News and reputation are pictured as going out, the way a person leaves a room and travels. A report about Jesus goes out into the surrounding country; the message about a church's faith goes out so that people everywhere have heard it. The word treats the news as if it had legs.

This is a natural extension of the basic sense: a saying or a story leaves its starting point and moves outward into a wider area. The emphasis is on the spreading itself, that the word has gone out and can no longer be contained.

4

to proceed from: said of words and intentions coming out of the mouth or heart, and of a person coming forth from a source or origin

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

What a person says and intends is pictured as coming out from inside them. The things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and it is these, Jesus says, that reveal and defile a person. Here the word marks the inside-to-outside movement of speech and the will, exposing where words really originate.

The Gospel of John presses this further into the language of origin. Jesus repeatedly says he came forth from God or from the Father, describing where he is from and the source he was sent by, not merely a journey he once took. The same word can describe a descendant who comes from an ancestor's line. In every case the focus is on the source someone or something has come out of.

What scholars say about exerchomai

The standard lexica treat ἐξέρχομαι as a common motion verb built on ἔρχομαι with the prefix ἐκ (out of). BDAG organizes its uses around literal going or coming out of a place, departing, the going out of evil spirits, the spreading of a report, and the figurative coming forth of words from the mouth and of a person from a source or origin, the last especially prominent in John's language of Jesus coming forth from the Father. LSJ documents the same spatial and figurative range in wider Greek, and the theological dictionaries note how John develops the origin sense.
